Consumers Back British

05/07/2010

Ian Jones, Vice Chairman of British Egg Products Association, urges food manufacturers to specify British Lion eggs to meet consumer expectations.

New research* by British Lion egg products has revealed that consumers were ‘shocked’ to find that many products, such as quiche, are made using imported eggs and egg products.

I was not particularly surprised by the results. British consumers expect British eggs as the norm, not the exception.

Participants in the research groups felt that the use of ‘hidden ingredients’, such as foreign egg products, compromised the quality and value of the product they were purchasing. They were also confused that fresh products, such as milk and eggs, which could easily be produced in the UK, were often imported.

There’s clearly some way to go before manufacturers catch up with consumer expectations. Specifying British Lion egg products and including a logo on pack could clear up the confusion in an instant.
