Foreign eggs concern British consumers

- research findings back British -

New research* by British Lion Egg Products has found that consumers were ‘shocked’ to find that many products, for example quiche, are in fact made using  imported eggs and egg products.

Participants in research groups, which took place at the end of 2009, felt that the use of ‘hidden ingredients’, such as foreign egg products, compromised the quality and value of the product they were purchasing. They were also confused that fresh products, such as milk and eggs, which could easily be produced in the UK, were often imported.

Consumers felt particularly strongly about products which have overcome food safety scares, such as eggs and red meat. They recognised the benefit of British quality schemes such as the Lion Quality Code of Practice for eggs and said that they would be prepared to pay a small premium for these.

Clive Frampton, spokesman for British Lion Egg Products, said: “Many consumers were dismayed to discover that foreign egg products are used in ‘British made’ products they buy regularly. To avoid a potential issue in the future, manufacturers and retailers should ensure they use British ingredients, particularly in products that are marketed as such. Specifying Lion egg products and including the logo on pack would help clear up the confusion by instantly reassuring consumers about the origin and quality of their food. The combination of the highest food safety standards and a desire to buy British make British Lion egg products the logical choice for consumers and food manufacturers.”

British Lion egg products are produced to the highest food safety standards, adhering to a strict Code of Practice that covers the entire supply chain from feed controls to finished product.
